Biography of James P. Butler

Jim entered the broadcast industry in the mid 70’s, where he worked as a Technical Supervisor for RTE in Dublin, Ireland. In 1980, he joined Windmill Studios as Technical Director to set up Ireland’s first post-production house, Windmill Lane Pictures. 


He would later cement his reputation as being one of the instigators and designers for the world-renowned post production house The Mill in London. Jim was also a member of the Consortium that won Ireland’s first independent TV station TV3. 

In 1989 he set up Ideal Systems in Ireland. Within 2 years, the first Asian branch was opened  in Hong Kong and has since expanded to 13 offices in 10 countries over a period of 30 years, establishing itself as the leading Media Systems Integrator in Asia.

Jim is one of the founders of the Society of Motion Imaging, a Nonprofit Organisation based in Hong Kong, whose mission is to enhance the technical standards of the Film and TV industries.
